While we love showing you some of the newest and most modern homes at the Delaware and Maryland beaches every week here on our blog, we also enjoy mixing things up on occasion and telling you about horse farms or inland properties or even homes and properties with a historical significance.
And it’s the latter that we’re featuring today, as we head to historic downtown Lewes and introduce you to not one, but two, beautifully restored properties in the “First Town in the First State.”
These properties sit next to each other on historic Third Street downtown and are really a must see, if for no other reason than to catch a glimpse into the way life used to be in coastal Delaware.
Take a look as we feature some of the outdoor areas of these dual properties, then keep reading below for much more on both 112 West Third Street and 114 West Third Street in historic downtown Lewes, Delaware.
Our latest Oldfather Group featured property is actually two properties in one, as we examine a piece of Lewes history on Third Street downtown.
We begin with a restored Colonial home resting at 112 West Third Street that features three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms over 1,900-square-feet of completely restored living space.
Dating back to the mid 18th century, this historic home has been completely restored over the last few years and today continues to resemble days gone by, but with a much more modern feel.
As you might guess, the home features sturdy hardwood flooring throughout, as well as architectural details of its time that include wooden beamed ceilings, brick accent walls and built-in shelving.
The current owners worked to keep as much of the pre-revolution feel of the home as they could during renovation efforts, which you’ll notice throughout the home.
The living room features a stone slab hearth fireplace common during the 18th century, a centerpiece of the home that’s a perfect place to socialize and talk about the history of Lewes, or whatever the topic of the day may be.
The modern kitchen leads to a beautiful dining room that’s simply made for a great evening spent with family and/or friends.
The French doors lead out onto an inviting backyard where you can sit by the fire pit and watch the fish in the koi pond while enjoying those warm spring and summer evenings in Delaware’s coastal region.
The spacious owner’s suite upstairs features original beam ceilings along with a tile bathroom and double doors that lead out onto the balcony with views of downtown Lewes.
Other features of this historic downtown Lewes property include a flex room with vaulted ceiling, two additional bedrooms and easy access not only to all of the shops and restaurants in the downtown area of Lewes, but also Lewes Beach and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.
Immediately adjacent to this historic home is a long-time staple of downtown Lewes, and that’s the blacksmith shop that has long anchored Third Street.
Featuring nearly 3,000-square-feet inside, this towering structure still functions as a blacksmith shop downstairs, though it could easily be converted for other uses if desired.
Head through the large barn doors on the front of the property and to an exterior stairway that leads to an upstairs apartment with a history of proven rental income.
The apartment features a fully equipped kitchen, an expansive living room and a vaulted ceiling bedroom that leads out onto a beautiful roof top deck with expansive views of downtown Lewes.
As with its neighbor at 112 West Third Street, the historic blacksmith shop is also conveniently located near all that Delaware’s coastal region has to offer, including the beaches and all of the fun and excitement of the “First Town in the First State.”
