Good day everyone and welcome once again to our “Weekender Blog,” brought to you every week by the real estate professionals at the Oldfather Group of Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty.
We hope everyone is enjoying a great summer season here in the coastal region, as we certainly are. It’s undoubtedly a unique and unprecedented summer at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, but that’s not stopping us from making memories and having a good time.
Due to current state restrictions put in place during the health crisis, however, most of the region’s large annual events have either been cancelled or postponed until a later date. This is an unfortunate aspect of the Summer of 2020, but one designed to keep all of us safe and ready to come back to the beaches again in 2021.
That being said, there’s still plenty to do here in the coastal region, even with social distancing guidelines in place. And we have a handful of things to tell you about again this week.
One quick note before we get into this week’s events. If you were planning on attending the popular Ocean City Air Show this weekend, that event has been postponed until later in the summer. As soon as we learn the new date for this event, we’ll be letting you know here on thecoastalcompass.com.
Now, let’s get started. We begin at the beaches and a popular event that’s taking on a new look this year, due to the current environment in Delaware and really throughout the world. And it revolves around many of our great local restaurants, which we urge you to support in whatever way you can.
Here’s what’s happening this weekend at the Delaware and Maryland beaches:
Culinary Coast Take Out Week (June 14-19). Shifting gears due to the current restrictions in place for local restaurants, Coastal Delaware Restaurant Week has been rebranded this year and is now being marketed as Culinary Coast Takeout Week.
In partnership with the Cape Gazette, Southern Delaware Tourism and the Rehoboth Foodie, this year’s event will feature takeout specials at dozens of the coastal region’s fantastic locally owned restaurants and bars.
Southern Delaware is known for many things, and one of those special local draws is the eclectic restaurant scene at the state’s most popular summertime resorts. Many of these fantastic eateries are being threatened right now due to ongoing restrictions, so we encourage everyone to support these local establishments in whatever way you can.
The 2020 Culinary Coast Takeout Week will run from Sunday, June 14 through Friday June 19. Visit culinarycoastrestaurantweek.com for participating restaurants and more information on this event.
Outdoor Concerts Announced (Summer of 2020). While concerts at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand have been cancelled for 2020, three southern Delaware communities have announced outdoor concert schedules in the last few days.
The Sussex County Seat of Georgetown will be holding its first concert of the summer on Thursday, June 18, on the grounds of the Nutter Marvel Carriage Museum on South Bedford Street. This concert will feature the Delmarva band 33 1/3, with the show beginning at 7 p.m.
Attendees have the choice of sitting outside, with social distancing guidelines in place, or listening to the concert from their vehicles.
The town of Millsboro will be holding outdoor concerts at Cupola Park this summer, beginning with a performance by local favorite Glass Onion on Tuesday, July 7.
Outdoor gatherings are restricted to no more than 250 people, which town officials don’t see as an issue for this early July concert.
Last but certainly not least, town officials in Lewes have announced a summer concert series to take place in Stango Park on 3rd Street.
The first concert of the summer will take place on Tuesday, June 23, and will feature the Delaware 287th Army Band, beginning at 7 p.m.
Officials have indicated that hand sanitizer will be provided at the event and social distancing rules will be enforced. Attendees are asked to bring their own own chairs and blankets for the event.

In keeping with social distancing requirements, this will be a virtual event that participants can complete anytime between 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, and midnight on Sunday, June 14.
This is a 5K qualifying event and the second event of this year’s Seashore Striders Championship Series.

There will continue to be temporary guidelines in place, however, due to the continuing health crisis. These include a maximum of 30 percent capacity in the theatre, the use of face masks and adherence to social distancing guidelines.
