Despite the fact that we have some great health care options right here in southern Delaware, sometimes a trip to a nearby medical facility is necessary due to conditions that are a little more involved or difficult to treat.
But that’s another advantage to living in the coastal region – it’s just a short drive away from some of the mid-Atlantic’s largest cities, as well as a few of the best medical centers in the country.
Today, we’re going to take a trip northbound on Route 1, above the Chesapeake & Delaware (C&D) Canal, and talk about some of the best hospitals and medicals centers in New Castle County.
Christiana Care Health System
Christiana Care is the largest health care system in Delaware and is largely centered in and around the greater Wilmington metropolitan area. The Christiana network features many medical facilities in northern Delaware, anchored by the state’s largest hospital.
Christiana Hospital boasts Delaware’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and is located in Newark, not far from the University of Delaware’s main campus.
Delaware’s largest hospital is comprised of 1.3 million-square-feet and has more than 900 beds, serving patients not only from the First State, but also from several nearby states in the mid-Atlantic.
Christiana is also the only high risk delivering hospital in Delaware, offering Level III neonatal intensive care. More than 7,200 babies are born at Christiana Hospital each year.
Close to 1,500 physicians and surgeons are active members of Christiana Care’s medical-dental staff, and more than one in 10 of them have located at least part of their practices on the Christiana Hospital campus, largely in two medical arts pavilions adjoining the main hospital.
Helen F. Graham Cancer Center
Located on the Christiana Hospital campus, the 200,000-square-foot Helen F. Graham Cancer Center is a state-of-the-art facility that serves cancer patients living in Delaware. The center features advanced medical, surgical and radiation procedures and diagnostic services. The cancer research program includes the Center for Translational Research, which is a collaborative program with the University of Delaware. The cancer center also includes the Christiana Care Breast Center, an outpatient facility that features the state’s only dedicated breast MRI.
Center for Heart & Vascular Health
The Center for Heart & Vascular Health offers the latest advances in cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, cardiac rehabilitation and preventive medicine. Each year, the medical team at the Center for Heart & Vascular Health performs more than 1,000 open-heart surgical procedures, plus thousands of diagnostic and interventional procedures in the hospital’s cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs. The Center for Heart and Vascular Health is involved in nearly 50 clinical trials each year.
Patients who have surgery at the Christiana Surgicenter are back in their homes the very same day. The center is located on the Christiana Hospital campus and is 25,000-square-feet, boasting the latest technology for a variety of surgical procedures, including biopsies, hernia surgeries foot and ankle surgeries and more.
The Christiana Surgicenter includes seven operating rooms, a preoperative testing area and a skilled staff of nurses, anesthesiologists and operating room support staff.
Christiana Care Wilmington Hospital
Seeing patients since 1890, Wilmington Hospital serves as Christiana Care’s corporate headquarters and is located in the heart of Wilmington. The 321 bed, more than 600,000-square-foot facility includes an emergency department, a center for rehabilitation, outpatient primary care services, a memory care center serving patients with memory disorders, diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, mental health services and a health and technology innovation center.

Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
The Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is a pediatric hospital located in Wilmington and is controlled by the Nemours Foundation, a non-profit organization created by philanthropist Alfred I. du Pont in 1936 and dedicated to improving the health of children.
The medical campus is located directly east of the DuPont Experimental Station, on a site that also houses the Nemours Mansion and Gardens. The facility provides Delaware’s only Pediatric Trauma Center, advanced inpatient and outpatient pediatric care in more than 30 specialties and intensive and acute pediatric care, as well as pediatric research.
The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware is located adjacent to the hospital and provides sleep rooms and showers for the parents and families of children receiving treatment.
The hospital is internationally recognized in several disciplines, including blood and bone marrow transplantation, acondroplasia, cancer, cardiology and cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics and solid organ transplantation.
Wilmington VA Medical Center
Located on Kirkwood Highway in Wilmington, the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center offers a wide range of medical services to veterans of the United States military.

Saint Francis Healthcare
For nearly a century, Saint Francis Healthcare has been a top medical provider in the Wilmington area. Saint Francis is a full service hospital providing a wide variety of high quality services, including cancer care, cardiology, maternity and physical therapy.
Saint Francis also organizes charity events and health and wellness programs in order to take care of the underserved members of northern Delaware.
The hospital was founded by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia in 1924 and is a member of Trinity Health, providing health care in an acute setting. Saint Francis also offers a program of all-inclusive care for seniors, a Home Care program and a variety of affiliated physician practices.
